Sanyo ECJ-F50S Micro-Computerized 5-Cup Rice Cooker And Steamer Review

by Amy Chang

The Sanyo ECJ-F50S Micro-Computerized 5-Cup Rice Cooker And Steamer is one of the most versatile units around. This rice cooker cooks every kind of rice there is to perfection, and it can be used to make soups and stews, as well as steam perfectly cooked vegetables. The only thing that it is missing is the ability to send a signal upon completion; instead, one has to look at the light. If the cook light is off then the food is done.

One of the best things about this rice cooker is how easy it is to use. Inside the inner pot, which is nonstick, there are various markings for water levels. To use the rice cooker simply find the water level based on the type of rice being cooked, fill up to that line with water, after adding rice, select the right type of rice from the menu and press start. Once the rice is done, it will automatically switch over to the keep warm setting. The retractable cord and carrying handle are added conveniences, they make carrying the rice cooker around a snap. Clean up is so simple, simply remove the inner pot and steam vent, and wash in hot, soapy water.

Pros:

    • 24 Programmable Timer – Majority of timers I Have found with rice cookers are up to 15 hours, so I really love this 24-hour timer. The longer programmable time allows me to truly plan ahead. And the LCD display makes it so much easier to read.

    • Keep Warm Setting – The keep warm setting is huge benefit because it enables me to serve warm food no matter what time we sit down. With the keep warm setting as soon as the food is done cooking the machine switches over to keep warm, ensuring the food is always at a safe temperature. Even better is the setting will keep food warm for up to 12 hours, so it doesn’t matter how late my family or I are running.

    • Extra Thick Bottom – The titanium bottom of this rice cooker is 3.5 mm thick, which is thicker than anything I have ever seen before. The extra thick bottom is a benefit to the rice cooker because it helps with even heating, no matter what is being cooked there is no more worrying about cold parts or even raw sections.

  • Fuzzy Logic Technology – I really love the fuzzy logic technology in rice cookers because it provides me with perfectly cooked rice every time. With the fuzzy logic technology, the rice cooker will automatically adjust its cooking temperature based on the amount of food and liquid being used to ensure everything is cooked to perfection. The one drawback to this method is that it can take longer for a pot of rice to cook, but the taste is so worth the wait.

Cons:

    • No Spatula Holder – One thing that annoys me is that there is no spatula holder for the rice spatula. This is only a minor annoyance, but most other rice cookers have a spot to either hang or place the rice spatula so it is easily accessible when dishing rice.

  • Defaults To White Rice Setting – Something else that is of a minor annoyance is the fact that the rice cooker defaults to the “white rice” setting every time you use it. For many people this is fine because they use their rice cooker for white rice only or they vary what setting they use so often it is no big deal having to set it. For people who use rice cookers for brown rice only or something else having to change it every time you cook is a pain. The rice cooker needs to have some kind of memory for the last setting used or the ability to change the default setting.

One thing that I noticed upon receiving this rice cooker is how similar it is to the Sanyo ECJ-D55S. In fact, the only differences I can tell between these two models is the size of the rice cooker, how many cups of rice they can handle, and the inner pots. The ECJ-F50S has a thicker titanium coating; it is 3.5 mm compared to the 2.5 mm coating the ECJ-D55S has. The ECJ-F50S can only handle up to 5 cups of uncooked rice, while the ECJ-D55S can handle up to 5.5 cups of uncooked rice.

Many people would prefer the larger capacity, but I prefer the thicker coating because it helps
