Aroma ARC-998 8-Cup Digital Rice cooker & Food Steamer Review

by Amy Chang

The Aroma ARC-998 8-Cup Digital Rice Cooker & Food Steamer is a rather versatile rice cooker. Not only does it easily cook any kind of rice available, it is also capable of making soups and stews, in addition to steaming perfect vegetables. One of the things that I truly love about this rice cooker is that I can use it to make anywhere from 4 to 16 cups of cooked rice, in a single batch.

I tend to make a lot of white and brown rice, and for those who know about brown rice they know just how time consuming and tricky it is to cook. This rice cooker makes cooking brown rice just as easy as white rice, simply choose the brown rice setting, add the right amount of water, and press cook and off you go. In fact, using this rice cooker is easy no matter what you are doing. Many people are out off by the digital display, but for me that just makes it easier to read. The attractive stainless steel with black accents exterior blends in with any kitchen and comes with its own measuring cup, rice spatula, and steam tray.

Pros:

  • Cook more than one item at a time – While many rice cookers come with the ability to steam vegetables the user must do so separately. This rice cooker can be used to cook rice at the same time as steaming any vegetables or meat. Even better are the flavors of the vegetables add to the rice being cooked, they give the rice its own unique flavor.

  • Keep Warm Setting – This is a must have for all rice cookers, but the trick is finding a rice cooker that does not allow the rice to burn at the bottom. The keep warm setting turns on automatically after the rice or food is done cooking. The setting is hot enough to keep the food at a safe serving temperature for several hours, but not hot enough to continue cooking the food.

  • Nonstick Inner Cooking Pot – The nonstick inner cooking pot is a great addition to this machine because it allows for easy cleanup. I have personally had to soak numerous pans to remove rice that has cooked onto the pan, not my idea of fun. The nonstick pan is simple to clean, hot, soapy water and a sponge is all it takes to remove the rice. Scrubbing with an abrasive brush is not recommended as it can scratch the nonstick surface.

  • Smudge Proof Exterior – Having stainless steel appliances I was expecting to be cleaning this rice cooker just about every day because of how they tend to attract fingerprints. I love this rice cooker, while it does need cleaning after use the exterior does not collect the fingerprints and smudges that my other stainless steel appliances do.

Cons:

  • Boils Over – One problem that is easy enough to deal with but can be a pain is the sticky rice water boiling over, usually through the steam vent. This is a minor nuisance, but because of how sticky it is, can be a pain to clean up. Luckily, using a warm dishrag cleans up the excess with no problems.

  • Steamer Tray A Bit Big – Another issue that I have is with the steamer tray, the holes inside the tray are too big. I used the tray the other day and was going to steam some mixed veggies, but the peas were too small, they kept falling through the holes. It would be better for the holes to be smaller and they tray could use more holes.

The ARC-998 is very similar to the Aroma Arc-1000. Both of these rice cookers allow users to do more than just cook rice, both have a nice digital display, but that is where the similarities end. The ARC-1000 is considered to be a professional rice cooker, but like the ARC-998 can also be used in any household. The biggest difference between these two rice cookers is the technology used to cook the rice, the settings available to choose from, and the size of the rice cooker. The ARC-998 can handle up to 8 cups of uncooked rice, where the ARC-1000 can handle up to 10. The ARC-1000 uses sensor logic technology to adjust the temperature as needed while the rice is cooking to provide the best results. The ARC-1000 also includes a 15-hour time delay timer, a quick rice, and smart steam setting.

Despite all of the extra features that the ARC-1000 has, I still decided to go with the ARC-998 and am glad I made that decision. The ARC-998 is one of the easiest rice cookers to use, even with all of its extra features. I mainly use it for rice, but I also love to cook vegetables in with my rice, not just steam them while the rice is cooking. The best part is that even with all of these extra features the ARC-998 is available for a reasonable price.
