Aroma ARC-838TC 8-Cup Digital Rice Cooker & Food Steamer

by Amy Chang

The Aroma ARC-838TC 8-Cup Digital Rice Cooker & Food Steamer is like a dream come true for me. One of the best things about this rice cooker is that it does everything that I need it to do and then some, all for a reasonable price. I have seen a ton of expensive rioce4 cookers that I would probably love, but I do not see the point in spending a lot of money on a rice cooker. This one gives me several useful features that I will actually use.

The 8-cup rice cooker provides up to 16 cups of cooked rice, even better is that any type of rice can be cooked using this appliance. I strongly believe that every kitchen needs to have a rice cooker, but not just any rice cooker it needs to be one that is easy to use. The Aroma ARC-838TC is one of the simplest ones to use, simply push down a button. It is also programmable, with a 15 hour delay timer, so I can schedule when I want my rice to start cooking while I am away. Steaming meats, vegetables, and cooking rice all at once allows me to put dinner on the table in a flash. The rice cooker comes with its own measuring cup, serving spatula, and steam tray to make cooking even easier.

Pros:

    • Cooks All Types Of Rice – One of the best things about this rice cooker is that it cooks any kind of rice out there, including the prepackaged products like Rice A Roni. Being able to cook every kind of rice out there ensures that I have perfect rice every time I make it, no more brunt Rice A Roni or other flavored rice. This is a huge plus for my family because we also eat a lot of brown and long grain rice, not having to cook it on the stove makes it a lot more convenient to eat.

    • Keep Warm Setting – Having a keep warm setting on a rice cooker is important because it allows everything at meal time to be served when hot. I have had rice cookers before that did not have the keep warm setting and the rice either was overcooked or cold. The keep warm setting allows the rice to stay nice and hot while no longer cooking it, so I can serve the rice when everything else is ready.

    • Steams Other Foods Simultaneously – Working as a food steamer is another great option because it gives me more use out of my rice cooker for a reasonable price. As an added benefit it can cook rice and steam vegetables at the same time, it can also do meat. This gives me the benefit of being able to cook an entire meal in one pot rather than having a ton of different things going at once. I can even use it to cook beans perfectly each time.

  • Easy To Clean Up – Everybody who has ever cooked rice knows how hard cooked on rice is to clean. This rice cooker has a removable inner pan that makes clean up easy, but even better is how easy the rice comes off the inner pan. No more soaking the pan to remove the rice.

Cons:

    • Steams too much – One problem I have with this rice cooker is the vent at the top of the machine. The vent is designed to allow the steam to escape, but it puts out a lot more steam than one might expect. I accidentally left it under my cabinets and almost ruined them. The best solution is to place the rice cooker out in the open where the steam cannot damage any wood cabinets.

  • Short Cord – I do not like how short the cord is because it limits me as to where I can place the rice cooker. Luckily, I have a plug near my stove top that allows me to keep the rice cooker out from underneath my cabinets.

Many people often compare the Aroma ARC-838TC to the Aroma ARC-1266F, mainly because of how many similarities they have. Both of these rice cookers allow you to cook rice and steam vegetables or meat at the same time. Despite the similarities these two rice cookers are just different enough that the differences need to be mentioned. The biggest difference between the two is the ARC-838TC is a digital rice cooker, while the ARC-1266F is a manual. The size of the rice cooker sis also different, the ARC-838TC allows users to cook up to 8 cups of uncooked rice, while the ARC-1266F only allows for 6 cups of uncooked rice.

For me one of the deciding factors with purchasing the Aroma ARC-838TC rice cooker was the fact that it allowed me to cook up to 8 cups of uncooked rice. I tend to cook for large groups of people, so I like being able to make a large amount of rice for when I entertain. Not only that but I really love how easy this rice cooker is to use, and how well the rice tastes coming out of the cooker. Although it was a bit more expensive than the ARC-1266F I still found it to be a reasonable price with all of the features it has.
